Mike Brownlow

Mike is a RIBA-registered architect and a Founding Director of the practice, based in our Winchester office. His career has included a full range of project types including Healthcare, Education, Residential, Leisure, Private Housing, Emergency Services and Commercial developments. The wide range of experience and contacts he has built up since starting work in the mid-80s allows him to provide knowledgeable advice on many different sectors and procurement types, as well as putting together suitable teams to deliver successful project outcomes. He lectures regularly at Southampton Solent University and is a RIBA Part 3 examiner at Portsmouth University. He is fluent in Italian and French, and enjoys arranging our karting challenge days in the summer and skiing in the Dolomites in the winter.

Steve Hole

Director and Architect

Steve joined Studio Four in 1995 as a RIBA-registered Project Architect working on a range of largely health-based schemes, progressing to Associate in 1997 and full Director in 1999. He has extensive experience across a variety of sectors and he plays a key role in the management of the Practice.Steve's no-nonsense approach has endeared him to Clients and Contractors alike and he has a key skill in designing with clients in meetings.In his spare time he is often found working on his barn in Northern France and spending time with his young daughter.

Gareth Jenkins

Director and Architect

Gareth is a RIBA-registered architect and Director at our Southampton Office. He joined Studio Four in 1996 after graduating from Cardiff University. Gareth's wide project experience includes primary healthcare, ecclesiastical and residential schemes at conceptual and detailed level. He looks after the Practice’s QMS system, and when not doing all of the above loves playing his bass guitar.

Phil Amey

Director and Senior Technologist

Philip joined Studio Four in 2002, became an Associate Director in 2007 and was made a full Director in 2011. He is a MCIAT-qualified senior technologist and has acted as lead consultant for a variety of projects ranging from new build and works of alteration to hospitals, large offices, research and development laboratories and other commercial buildings. In 2013 Phil became a member of the association of Project Managers. In his spare time he likes to kayak on the River Itchen.

Peter Barnett

Peter joined Studio Four in 1998 as a RIBA-registered architect and has been a Director since 2011. Peter primarily woks in the healthcare sector but also has a good experience of educational projects. A bit of an IT guru, Peter is leading the company into BIM through the use of Revit software.

Steve Robinson

Associate Director

Steve is an experienced RIBA-registered architect with a broad portfolio of Studio Four projects since 2002, including two new GP Surgeries, major alterations to two Leisure Centres and numerous Education projects at Sparsholt College and Winchester University. He is also our key contact for the RNLI, having completed lifeboat stations at Hayling Island and Cowes and now working on new ones at Eastbourne, Margate, Selsey, Penlee and Llandudno. Based in our Winchester office, Steve assists Mike Brownlow with the running of this busy branch and was promoted to Associate in January 2015. He is a keen runner and karter, and also enjoys family camping trips with his young sons.

Stuart Turnbull

Associate Senior Technologist

Stuart is a MCIAT-qualified senior technologist with over 16 years’ experience in the Construction Industry, initially working for a Civil Engineering Company before joining Studio Four in November 2004. Through the practice he obtained an HNC and a BA Hons Degree in Architectural Technology, and also his PRINCE2 Project Manager qualification. He has worked on a wide variety of projects including extensions and refurbishment works for Highbury College, numerous schemes for Kenwood Delonghi, Healthcare projects in Basingstoke and Portsmouth and also small scale domestic alterations for local authorities, undertaking the lead design role in many instances. Stuart was promoted to Associate in January 2015.

Claire Lingham

Associate Architect

Claire originally joined Studio Four in 2005 as a summer student. She was one of the top designers in her year and her design work has been published and commended in many instances. Claire rejoined the practice in 2011 and became a RIBA-registered architect in early 2014. She works primarily with the Specialist Projects division, focused almost entirely on Residential work. Claire has good 3D and graphic skills and as such contributes greatly to the marketing of the practice. Claire was promoted to Associate in July 2016. Claire was the Project Architect for Rushmore Farm which won the RICS South East Residential Project of the year in 2016. Claire is also working towards becoming a qualified Conservation Architect and in her spare time she enjoys travelling, photography, skiing and spending time with her young daughter.

Paul Veysey

Associate Architect

Paul joined Studio Four in 2006 as a part 2 graduate and went on to qualify as an Architect, gaining his Masters Degree in 2011 and qualifying as a RIBA-registered architect. Most recently Paul has been the project architect for the Smile Support and Care Project; a new £3.2m building that provides a hotel for families and their children with complex learning difficulties. Paul became an Associate in January 2017.

Gordon Shackell

Gordon joined the practice in 2011 as a RIBA-registered architect with a broad experience of many projects including retail shopping centres, garden centres, supermarkets, chain restaurants, offices, factory units, as well as residential, education and MOD buildings. Gordon specialises in design, space planning, Planning applications, Building (& Fire) Regulations compliance, CAD, hand drawing, building technology / detailing, scheduling and NBS specification writing, CDM risk assessments, project programming and full contract administration.

Andrew Browett

Andrew joined Studio Four in 2003 as a part 2 Graduate from Portsmouth University. He obtained his part 3 qualification in 2006 and has since been a RIBA-registered architect working on mainly traditional and framework Healthcare projects, as well as Education projects at Bournemouth & Poole College, Portsmouth and Winchester Universities. In August 2014 he moved to our Southampton office to work on Housing projects. In his spare time he enjoys cycling, snowboarding, karting and restoring his classic Mini.

Jez Davies

Jez joined Studio Four in early 2015 having previously working in Chichester. He has been a RIBA-registered architect since 2011, undertaking all elements of his education at Portsmouth University. His experience includes college buildings, car showrooms, flats, student housing and one-off houses. Outside the office he is an established part of the Portsmouth roller derby leagues - as referee for the women's team and player for the men's team. As a child he played with Lego a lot (which might explain pursuing a career in architecture) and even today probably owns more Lego than a grown man should.

Simon Helm

Simon Joined the practice in January 2016. He studied at Oxford Brookes and Portsmouth University, becoming a RIBA-registered architect in 2013. Before moving to Winchester he worked in London on high end Residential projects. He has also worked in Oxford, Devon and Sydney. Simon is passionate about travel and also enjoys sailing, kayaking, hiking and yoga.

Rhiannon North

Rhiannon joined Studio Four in October 2016. Since qualifying as an architect in 2006 her employment and experience have been in both the private and public sectors. Projects she has undertaken with both professionalism and commitment in the dual role of architect and lead consultant have predominantly been in the Education sector, but more recently she’s been engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and clients on Healthcare projects. At our Winchester office she’s been working on schemes for the Leckford Estate and Primary Healthcare clients, and most recently assisting Steve Robinson with our RNLI commissions.When not at work Rhiannon continues to find creative outlets including sewing, baking, cake decorating and glass fusing; she is also learning to crochet and enjoys reading, musicals and Murder Mysteries!

Chris Sharp

Building Surveyor / Senior Technologist

Chris originally joined the practice in 2003 as an Architectural Technician before relocating to Cornwall where he worked for an architectural practice and a firm of chartered surveyors. Chris re-joined the practice in 2015 as a MCIAT-qualified senior technologist and is a key member of Studio Four’s Specialist Projects department to provide building surveying and architectural design services. He is also utilising his extensive Healthcare knowledge to assist the practice with projects in that sector when required. Chris is also currently an associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and looks forward to his assessment for full membership in May 2016. In his spare time Chris enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at the beach with his young daughter.

Carl Roberts

Senior Technologist

Carl joined Studio Four in 2007 and works in our Winchester office. He has experience in a vast range of projects from small domestic extensions to large new Healthcare facilities, as well as Education, Leisure and Local Authority buildings, running smaller schemes as Project Leader. As a MCIAT-qualified senior technologist he is experienced in all stages of project procurement and has forged excellent relationships with clients and contractors. He enjoys playing golf during the summer months, when it’s dry!

Kurt Riggs

Kurt returned to Studio Four in 2008 after a brief spell at another practice, and works primarily on Healthcare work. He is a very competent ACIAT-registered technologist and has recently completed the drawings for a new emergency department at Southampton General Hospital utilising Revit software.

Andrew Clarke

Mike Lord

Mike joined Studio Four in 2001, returning to architecture after project-managing jobs for Tesco and W H Smith. As a Senior Technician Mike has specialised in healthcare and education work, from Portsmouth to Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight, more notably in the £6.2m DOHaD project for the University of Southampton. Technically complex projects for Southampton General Hospital has been undertaken using BIM-based Revit software and he is responsible for the Activity DataBase (ADB) resource for all healthcare projects. Mike also is one of the office photographers to record completed projects for marketing.

Lauren Honey

Having finished her RIBA Part 1 course in 2011, Lauren completed her first year out at Hampshire County Council in their Historic Buildings and Conservation department. This, coupled with an MSc in Historic Building Restoration gives Lauren particular expertise and specialist knowledge in the field of historic buildings. Following further experience of Residential projects at a small architectural practice, she joined Studio Four in May 2016 and intends to embark part-time on her RIBA Part 2 studies.Lauren is currently working on numerous projects including Residential, Historic and Medical schemes. Lauren is a mum of twins and a keen runner, recently completing the Winchester Half Marathon for charity. Though she doesn’t have a lot of free time she also enjoys reading and socialising with friends.

Emma McMullan

Emma joined Studio Four in September 2016 as a Part I Architectural Assistant. She originally trained in fine art and practised and exhibited as an artist in the UK and Europe during the 1980s and 90s. After a five-year stint at Arts Council England Emma made a career change to architecture, where she has been able to combine her artistic, writing and presentation skills. She has an MA in Urban Design and is in the fifth year of a part-time BA Architecture course. Emma has significant experience in liaising with disabled people to ensure they achieve equal access to public buildings and was the chair of Free for All, the disability advisory committee for Sadler’s Wells and Chair of the Access Group at the South Bank Centre. More recently, in her role as a Part I Assistant, she has worked on student residential, university and school refurbishment and new-build projects.
