Holy Saviour Church in Bitterne had occupied a ‘split site’ for many years with halls and other community spaces remote from the main church, which sits in the heart of Bitterne. This project therefore sought to bring these spaces together onto one site, with new modern facilities and flexible use throughout.
Phase 1 comprised a new two-storey extension to provide halls, meeting rooms, kitchen and toilet facilities, to replace an existing smaller extension; a glazed link with a feature staircase and ‘bridge’ connects to the main church.
Phase 2 comprised the reordering of the main church with the removal of pews and the floor levelled, allowing multi-use. A new mezzanine floor across the back of the church provides additional smaller rooms and circulation – and this joins with the bridge link built as part of the first phase.
The project has transformed this active church, bringing modern facilities together in the heart of Bitterne.
